S.P. Somtow

This new collection from S.P. Somtow deftly combines the elements of speculative fiction and Eastern myth with the substance of mainstream literature. Here shamans, aliens, dung-eating ghosts, mechanical men, murderers, and (of course) dragons cross paths with men and women trapped in the collision course of East and West, tradition and modernism.

Drawing on his own experiences as a Thai native educated in the West, Somtow paints his characters with humor and compassion and emerges as a Magic Realist, with his feet planted firmly in two vastly different cultures.

The title story, "Dragon's Fin Soup," was nominated for a World Fantasy Award while another, "Diamonds Aren't Forever," was nominated for a Sturgeon Award.

Somtow is a clasical composer and film-maker, as well as the author of a number of science fiction, fantasy, and horror books.
